When Paul and Tracy started to look around for a camper van they very quickly realised that a camper holds its value far better than the van that is the base vehicle. “During our search for a camper van, then for a donor van we found so many examples of 20 year old campers that are worth 10 times the value of the vehicle they are based on.” This financial reality is what drives many first time would be camper van owners to do it themselves.
The Paddy project has quite a tight budget most of which was raised by selling a Fiat Multipla together with a small loan.
Base vehicle: £1500.00
Electrics: £500.00
Plumbing: £400.00
Wood Work: £350.00
Upholstery: £200.00
Contingency: £250.00
Entertainment System: £450.00
Total: £3650.00
The base vehicle for Paddy is a 2 litre petrol Ford Transit LWB high roof mini bus in Green. Quite an appropriate colour as Paul and Tracy intend to do as much recycling as possible in their build. An Abbey Piper caravan was available and has donated fixtures and fittings.
The Paddy Project web site is very detailed, packed with photographs ideas and inspiration. Well worth a visit.
Once completed Caravanwise can provide a competitive camper van insurance quote for diy campers.
