Teresa and Roland’s first campervan was an old Transit with a folding wooden platform for the bed and a folding camping table for cooking and washing. It worked, but it was a bit lacking in creature comforts.
So when then chance came to buy and convert a newer Ford Transit, they were determined to do it properly. As it needed to serve as everyday transport as well as a motorhome, a DIY conversion was the only option. The cost and age of professional conversions made them unaffordable and impractical.
The conversion was finished at the beginning of 2009 and since then has completed a month-long tour of Spain and Portugal plus a few shorter trips. Roland has published an illustrated DIY conversion guide based on his experiences with this van, to help other people get started on the road to a self-build motorhome conversion.
You can see the whole conversion guide – from choosing a van to insuring and registering the conversion with the DVLA – here: DIY Camper Conversion Guide
Once completed Caravanwise can provide a competitive camper van insurance quote for diy campers.
